Organizing as a South Carolina Benefit Corporation

Built for Scouting. Built to Last.

MeritMap is a public benefit corporation dedicated to providing accessible advancement tracking and troop management tools for the Scouting community.

Our Story

MeritMap started the way most scouting tools do: a scouting family frustrated with juggling spreadsheets, paper forms, and five different apps just to run a troop.

A scouting family in Spartanburg, South Carolina, built MeritMap to solve their own troop's problems — and designed and tested it together from day one. What started as a family project became something every troop could use.

Today, MeritMap handles advancement tracking, event planning, troop payments, and communication — all in one place. Built by scouters, for scouters.

Why a Benefit Corporation?

MeritMap is organizing as a South Carolina Benefit Corporation under the SC Benefit Corporation Act (Title 33, Chapter 38). This is a deliberate choice.

A benefit corporation is a for-profit company with a legally protected public mission. Our directors are required to consider the interests of scouts, families, scoutmasters, and the broader scouting community when making material business decisions — not just shareholder returns.

This means:

  • The mission is permanent. Our public benefit purpose is written into our articles of incorporation. It can't be removed without a supermajority vote.
  • Accountability is built in.We publish an annual benefit report measuring how we've served the scouting community, assessed against a third-party standard.
  • The mission survives ownership changes. If MeritMap is ever sold or transferred, the public benefit obligation travels with the company.

We chose this structure because scouting tools should serve scouts first. A benefit corporation holds that commitment in law, not just in marketing copy.

What We Stand For

Mission First

Every decision we make starts with one question: does this help scouts advance? As a benefit corporation, we're legally required to consider the scouting community's interests alongside business decisions.

Youth Safety

Two-deep messaging, AI monitoring, parental controls, and children's privacy protections aren't add-ons. They're built into the foundation of everything we build.

Community Owned

MeritMap exists to serve troops, not extract value from them. Our benefit corporation structure means the mission travels with the company, even if ownership changes.

Scout-Led Design

Empowering scouts to own their success. Every feature is designed around the patrol method and tested by real troops doing real scouting. If it doesn't work at a campout, it doesn't ship.

MeritMap is an independent company. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) or any council, district, or chartered organization. Scouts BSA and related terms are trademarks of Scouting America.
